Why Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a gentle, evidence-informed therapy that works with your body's natural healing processes. While every person's experience is different, acupuncture may support overall health and well-being by helping the body adapt to stress, encouraging relaxation, and promoting healthy physiological function.

Many people commonly seek acupuncture for support with

  • Menstrual health and cycle concerns

  • Fertility and reproductive wellness

  • Pregnancy, labour preparation, and postpartum care

  • Stress, anxiety, and emotional well-being

  • Sleep concerns

  • Pain management, including headaches, neck, back, pelvic, and joint pain

  • Digestive concerns

  • General wellness and preventative care

Acupuncture is often used alongside conventional medical care as part of a collaborative approach to health.

How Acupuncture Works

Acupuncture involves the insertion of extremely fine, sterile needles into specific points and areas on the body based on energetic pathways known as meridians.

Current research suggests acupuncture may influence the nervous system and its neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins. It may also support overall circulation thus aiding in the bodies modulating and regulatory processes.

Treatment may also encourage a shift into the parasympathetic ("rest and restore") state, allowing the body an opportunity to rest.

Many people find treatments deeply relaxing and appreciate having dedicated time to slow down and focus on their health.

FAQ

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture does not typically hurt. Individuals can experience sensations known as "de-qi" or the arrival of qi and activation of the point.  These sensations  can include numbness, tingling, aching, throbbing, or a zap sensation.

What to wear to your appointment?

Patients are recommended to wear loose comfortable clothing in order to access necessary points. Bringing a hair tie or clip is not a bad idea either.

How long is an appointment?

Appointments can change based on the constitution of the individual. Weaker individuals may need shorter retention times. The initial appointment is typically 75-90 minutes, where follow up appointments can be booked in intervals of 45 and 60 minutes depending on their needs.

What to do after your session?

Patients are typically instructed to keep hydrated, other suggestions may be added based on the individuals treatment plan.

Frequency of treatments?

Acupuncture is a supportive tool and does not cure or treat disease of physical structure. Acupuncture varies person to person and no results are ever guaranteed. In regard to pain typically for acute issues patients are recommended to book 1-2 sessions a week for 4-12 weeks, then transition slowly into a maintenance stage. Chronic pain support can take longer and may need more frequent treatments. For patients seeking support with fertility and menstrual concerns, patients are recommended to book 1 session a week for 12 weeks.

What to expect during an appointment?

During your first appointment you will have a comprehensive first intake which typically takes 30 minutes to review. We then use pulse and tongue diagnosis to support and confirm pattern symptomatology. Once intake, pulse and tongue are completed, needling can then begin. Retention time for needles range from 10-30 minutes depending on constitution of the individual. Follow up sessions include a brief follow up, and pulse and tongue diagnosis.
